PhD position in Affordable and climate-neutral housing renovation

You have the chance to be part of a globally renowned academic institution specializing in carbon-neutral and cost-effective housing, with a specific emphasis on building refurbishment. We provide an enriching work atmosphere characterized by a diverse community comprising Ph.D. students, Postdocs, and seasoned researchers hailing from various educational and cultural backgrounds.

PhD Project Description

Access to affordable housing is a fundamental human right, yet it remains unfulfilled in Europe. Simultaneously, housing has become a significant source of wealth and inequality among high-income populations. Achieving a low-carbon Europe while addressing social inequalities is a complex challenge. For instance, energy-poor households may struggle with carbon-reduction taxes, low-income homeowners may lack funds for energy-efficient upgrades, and social housing landlords may face challenges relocating tenants during renovations. To address these issues, we are recruiting a Ph.D. student for a European research project funded by the European Commission. The project aims to address unsustainable housing and energy poverty through a structured literature review and real-building case studies. The goals include identifying exemplary renovation projects, analyzing regulatory frameworks, evaluating digital tools in renovation planning, and proposing governance arrangements for a just transition. The Ph.D. position is for a maximum of five years, including research and teaching responsibilities.

Qualification

Master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher-education credits in Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent with relevant courses in building performance, building renovation, affordable housing etc. The position requires advanced knowledge on building energy performance calculation, housing renovation standards and EU regulation. The position requires very good verbal and written communication skills in English.
