PhD Scholarships in 5G-Connected Assistive Robots at Aalborg University

PhD at Aalborg University Denmark

Aalborg University plays a significant role in enhancing global society's knowledge base and advancing the prosperity, welfare, and cultural development of Danish society. This is achieved through engaging in research, providing education based on research findings, delivering services to the public sector, and fostering collaborative knowledge-sharing endeavors. AAU prepares students for the future, emphasizing a dynamic and transformative partnership with the surrounding community as the foundation for its activities.

PhD Project Description

Wireless connectivity and cloud computing are key drivers of 5G systems, enabling innovative applications in digital health. An important use case is cloud-connected assistive robots, such as bionic limbs and exoskeletons, equipped with advanced sensors and cloud connectivity to enhance patients' quality of life.

The concept of cloud-connected assistive robots relies on the interaction between connectivity, cloud functionality, and user behavior. This PhD project aims to address various research and design aspects, including:

  • Connectivity requirements for supporting cloud-connected assistive robot operation: Which interfaces and communication techniques are suitable to meet these requirements?
  • Leveraging cloud resources to enhance the capabilities of assistive robots: How can cloud-based computation revolutionize performance and user experience? What are the advantages and limitations compared to edge-based computation frameworks?
  • Ensuring robust functioning of cloud-connected assistive robots despite expected communication disturbances (packet loss, jitter, loss of connection).
  • Optimal models for sharing control between the cloud-based controller and the user: How will users react and adapt to communication disturbances?

This project focuses on investigating and addressing these research and design aspects related to cloud-connected assistive robots.

PhD Requirements

Prospective applicants to this PhD proposal should have the following qualifications;

  • M.Sc. degree in wireless communications, communications engineering, computer science, automation and control or similar
  • solid mathematical and analytical skills;
  • experience in programming, e.g., in C++, Phython or Matlab(experience with programming of software defined radios and/or off-the-shelf communication modules is a plus);
  • a creative mindset and curiosity to research and develop new solutions with highly skilled colleagues.

The study project will be conducted in collaboration with researchers from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Telenor, Denmark; OttoBock, Germany; and Aarhus University Hospital, Denmark.

The successful candidate will be hosted by CMI section, which features a dynamic and international atmosphere. The section is located in Copenhagen, a vibrant metropolitan city that tops quality-of-life charts. The successful candidate will enjoy a world-class research environment, excellent working conditions, and full employment benefits accompanied with a competitive salary.

PhD Benefits

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
